Although I spent decades teaching English and doing freelance work for several regional magazines in Central Pennsylvania, my ultimate goal was always to write a book. After moving to Los Angeles, Dianna De La Garza presented me with the perfect opportunity to do just that. Applying all the tools I had honed as both a teacher and contributing writer, I set about the task of helping Dianna gather the stories and memories that might be used in her memoir. We spent months and months on the process, laughing and crying together in the nearly windowless office, located on the lower level of her home, that we affectionately nicknamed “the dungeon.”
In the process, we both learned a lot about the challenges, heartaches, and joys that molded us into the women we are today. Because Dianna De La Garza was so honest and intimate in her answers to my questions, she made my job as co-writer so much easier. Falling with Wings is a true and insightful story that hopefully will inspire readers everywhere to approach the complexities of mental health issues with compassion, courage, and hope.
Moving forward, I hope to continue writing stories. My other goal is to conduct workshops about memoir, elaborating on the process of “Freeing the Stories You Carry.” If you have a story that you feel compelled to share and are looking for assistance, please contact me about the possibly of hosting a workshop or working with me privately. Simply fill out the form on my Contact Page and I’ll get back to you as quickly as I can.
